Christmas in the Country

My favorite holiday title is:  Christmas in the Country

I am: Sally Derby, Children's author from Cincinnati, Ohio.

This book is my favorite because: "For Diane Goode's beautiful illustrations and for the meaningful text describing a family's love and warmth."

My favorite holiday tradition is: "We have always had a secret name exchange each Sunday during Advent. You are to behave as the Christ child would to the person whose name you drew, doing small unobserved kindnesses. The following Sunday each family member tries to explain who he thinks acted as Christ child to him, and why he thinks so. Since we had six children and two foster sons it was easier to remain unobserved than it would be in a smaller family, but as my daughter looks back she observed that every Sunday she looked around and realized how many kindesses and how much love everyone in the family had given her the previous week."

Publisher Marketing

  • Author: Cynthia Rylant
  • Publisher: Blue Sky Press
  • Ages: Toddler to Up

Publisher Marketing: Cynthia Rylant returns to her Appalachian roots in this story of a young girl who lives with her grandparents in the country. As in her very first book, When I was Young in the Mountains (for which illustrator Diane Goode received a Caldecott Honor), Rylant evokes the warmth of the joyful Christmas season and celebrates the greatest gift of all -- the love of family. Diane Goode's cheerful watercolors capture the festivities of the season, from Christmas trees loaded with homemade ornaments to the snow-covered countryside. "Christmas in the Country" is a warm, evocative portrait of a loving family and a favorite season..
