Contests
Alley Sounds
By Lisa Miller, Contest #200910:

As they approached the alley, Samantha and Drew tensed. A large, menacing red-eyed rat stopped in its tracks, mesmerized by Samantha's flashlight beam.  Holding on to her little brother, Samantha held her breath as the wind howled and cut through her.  "Night Alley" was the quickest shortcut home, otherwise Samantha would never have suggested it. With dark clouds overhead, the alley felt even more threatening.  Now, she was regretting her decision. And poor Drew!  He went anywhere she asked him to.

"Sorry Drew. I should have chosen the long way."

"It's ok," said Drew, trying to appear confident.

The alley was cold, long and windy.  Just when Samantha had decided to make a run for it, she heard an eerie sound.

"Did you hear something, Drew?"

"Yes, but I'm not sure I want to know what it is."

Listening again, they heard it even louder.

"Do we dare keep going?"

"Oh, Sam, do we have to?"

"Yes, if we want to get home fast."

Pulling her brother, Samantha rounded the last bend and found the source of the sound.

"Look!" yelled Samantha. "Kittens!"

"Let's take them home!"

"Yes.  Let's!"

Carrying the kittens in a box, they finally arrived safely home.
