A Chicken's Nightmare
By Carolyn Ann Aish, Contest #200707

“With July 4th coming up, we'll have to be really careful Myrtle, when we cross the road,” said Jessie the chicken. “There’ll be so much traffic around--and you know what happened last year.”

“No,” said Myrtle and asked, “What happened?”

“Bertie…”

“Oh, yes, I do remember. Poor Bertie,” Myrtle clucked her beak, blinked her eyes and bowed her head, “our poor mate Bertie. He was the chicken that didn’t get to the other side. We will have to be careful, after all that’s why we chickens cross the road! To get to the other side where the grass is greener.”

Jessie shivered her neck feathers, and said sadly, “our poor little flat mate.”
