There’s actually a National Save A Spider Day?” My girlfriends would think I’ve lost my ever-loving mind if I told them my secret. It happens that I have a fascination for spiders. I stand close and watch their little furry bodies as they lumber along. Their webs are a beautiful designed architecture, which fascinates the artist in me. I can’t resist examining each specimen carefully with its bright colors and shapes. As I sat on my back porch swing enjoying a cool evening, I discovered under the roof’s eve a gargantuan beige spider in its thick-as-thread web. The spider’s head was a large cubical shape and as large as my thumb. He reminded me of Spiderus Reeves in the children’s book, Miss Spider’s Wedding, by David Kirk, which is wonderfully illustrated. A favorite pastime with my grandson is to find spiders and bugs and let them crawl on us. “Kill a Spider? No way!” Zach says. We might fetch it with a tissue and take it outside but never kill it. © 2007 Martha Lancaster.
