The air smelled of summer rain in the dense, flowery meadow as a white mist hugged the mossy ground. A soft breeze caused the turquoise strands of grass to sway. A bluebird cried mournfully while grasshoppers jumped and tiny bugs flitted. It was an enchanted place. Alas, if you looked close enough, you would find that tiny winged creatures, resembling humans, were hard at work everywhere. Their hair colors were every color imaginable. They danced, twisted, and dove while keeping this magical place in shape. In the far corner of the meadow was a beautiful waterfall. Behind the waterfall a cavern was filled with wet ferns and moss. Above, puffy amethyst-colored clouds filled the sky. Raindrops began to fall from the clouds. A soft and tiny plopping sound was coming from the waterfall, pond, and river as the raindrops landed. Thunder rolled across the meadow and flashes of lightning illuminated the sky. When the rain stopped in the evening, pale white stars dotted the sky that hinted a touch of a purple moon. Nothing was ever angry in this meadow. And in the cavern, hundreds of exhausted fairies placed their heads softly on the green foliage and slept. © 2009 Paige O. Original for CCF.
