A Seed of Faith
By Racheal Hearst, Contest #200804

She took one of the mysterious seeds and tossed it into the ground as she watched her sister gently holding the other one in her hands.

“Lena I don’t know why we have to do this” she said with a sigh.

Lena’s dark brown eyes met her sisters and then looked back at the seed glittering in her hand in the early spring sun.  “He said that it would grow.”

“I doubt that.” she snorted. “Looks more like some kind of pebble if you ask me.” she said to her.

Lena placed the seed in the hole that she had carefully dug for it and began to cover it up.

“There you go little seed.” Lena said as she patted the earth around it.

Lena tended to the ground that held her seed every day while her sister did only when she remembered to, which was not often.  When winter had arrived and nothing had come of the seed Lena’s sister teased her about her “wasted time.”

The following spring Lena resumed her care of the seed and awoke one day to find the most beautiful flower with a fairy emerging from its center.
