My First Day at Work
By Rebecca B., Contest #200808

Waving frantically at the street car didn’t help. It drove away. Great. It was my first day at my new job and, at 14, I was too young to drive. My mom had asked someone who works with her to pick me up today and they said I could catch a street car. But the one that would have gotten me to work on time had just passed me by.

Then, as I was sitting in my driveway trying to think of a way to get to work, it started to rain and hail. How could this day get any worse?

I decided to ride my bike to work. I printed off a mapquest page, and started to ride off in the rain. Soon, the page was too wet to read. So now I was lost and started to cry. Finally, a nice man found me and asked where he should take me. I told him to take me to the horse stables on River Road, as my job was to clean out the stalls. I got there, cold, and dripping wet.

My boss walked up to me, and said, "What are you doing here? You don't work until tomorrow."
