A Bit of Fowl Play
By Carolyn Ann Aish, Contest #200711

“Beware of man eating turkey” was the sign at the entrance to Birdwood Forest.

“No human is safe here,” a second sign read.

“Turkeys, hide in November,” the next sign said.

The two boys crept into Birdwood Forest, each holding a sack. The next sign read, “Turn back now!”

“Are you scared?” Tom asked.

“Never,” replied Dave. “I’ve heard that the turkeys are huge here.”

“I’m scared,” Tom said.

“Don’t be afraid. I know we’re here for foul play, but the turkeys don’t know that.”

“Foul play? Oh, fowl play, I get it,” said Tom.

A gobble, gobbling sound chattered through the trees. A large rope net fell from above, entrapping the pair. Tom and Dave yelled. A giant turkey stood over them, and others encircled the small clearing.

“We’ll let you leave Birdwood Forest if you’ll do one thing,” the giant turkey said.

“Anything,” they agreed.

“Do the chicken dance.”

So, as music sounded out, the net was lifted and Dave and Tom did the chicken dance. Before they had finished, all the turkeys vanished, as did the net.

As they left the forest, Dave said firmly, “Next time, we’ll bring cameras!”

“And bigger sacks!” said Tom.
