Smell of Incense
By John Neeley, Contest #200810

It was a dark and stormy night, and silence filled the cathedral. The walls stood patiently, waiting to be visited. Suddenly, a loud "clang" rang throughout the church. As the door creaked open, fragments of lightning made their way around the room. Footsteps of a dark figure began to echo across the hall until he finally rested his knees on the pulpit.

"Funny, never did like these places much," he told himself.

Memories ran through him and the smell of incense always left him in discomfort.  He did not want to be here, but he had No option. Before IT would happen, he knew he had to come. Seconds were ticking down before all things where set right. She had to die; she would now be a memory he had to erase.

With tears coming out of his eyes, he rested his head in his hands saying, "I'm not saying I'm sorry. I'm saying it has to be done."

He pulled out a small piece of parchment from his damp cloak and left it on the pulpit. As the doors shut the last glimpse of light, bells rang throughout the cathedral, leaving it back in a state of darkness.
