Sharyn wasn’t sure whom she expected—a little older—or younger—someone the same—or, different? Male?—The child was named after their father, Vivian Stone. Sharyn found the names on the Internet. Vivian Stone was buried here. Sharyn scanned the area again. The ceremony was over. No one stood near her father’s grave. She walked away. Adopted when she was a baby, Sharyn discovered she had the same mother and father as one other person on earth. It was possible ‘Vivian’ was a girl’s name, wasn’t it? Across the square, Sharyn turned and looked back. Someone knelt at the cross near her father’s memorial plaque. She retraced her steps and waited behind the female figure. The girl placed a wreath of flowers beneath the white cross and dried her eyes. Standing, she turned. She stared, transfixed. Like looking in a mirror and seeing her image wearing different clothes. “Vivian?” Sharyn asked. The girl nodded. “I’m your sister, Sharyn, your twin… sister.” “Shut up! Of all the things to happen!” Vivian exclaimed, hugging her, adding, “On Memorial Day!” © 2007 Carolyn Ann Aish.
