Contests
Mother of the Year
By Cheryl Johnson, Contest #200704

It was not that Sam didn't appreciate his mom cooking a nutritious meal. It was more of her motivation for doing it that bothered him.

She had an image to uphold with her little Country Club mom friends, and impressing them was one of her favorite pastimes. This also entailed keeping the house immaculate and volunteering at his school on a regular basis.

He was pretty sure she was hoping to win some mysterious Mother of the Year award. And if there were such a thing, she’d probably win it too.

Everyone thought she was a great Mom. Everyone except her own son. She never seemed to have time to do anything he wanted to do, the fun stuff. She was always busy cleaning the house, doing laundry, or fixing some fancy dinner for him and Dad. Sadly he poked his fork at the tofu and vegetable medley and wondered what the other moms would think if they only knew...if they only knew...

Cheryl Johnson enjoys stringing words together and hopes to one day be published. But she's also learned that she must write purely for writing's sake. Without any ulterior motive. She lives in Winston-Salem, NC.
