Tricked!
By Annalie Hamilton, Contest #200902

The lingering scent of chocolate tickled my nose as I hid behind the kitchen cupboard. Mother had made hot chocolate and was enjoying it outside. I was hiding from my older brother because we were playing hide and seek.

I waited to be found, though I knew it would be awhile. I found myself counting the nails on the cupboard. Jack was taking a long time to find me. I sneaked a peek around the side, but the kitchen was empty. I crawled out from my hiding spot and looked around. I searched for my brother, checking the hallway and stairwell. I found my mother outside. She had finished her hot chocolate.

"Have you seen Jack?" I asked her.

"No, he was looking for you," she replied. I turned back towards the house. "Wait Belle, take this for me," Mum called.

She was holding out her empty mug. I took it into the kitchen and that's when I heard a giggle. It came from the cupboard. I knelt down and looked in the gap. My brother was hiding behind the cupboard.

“You tricked me!” I said and he laughed. “Tag, you’re in,” I shouted while he chased me outside.
