AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR TO SPEAK AND CRITIQUE AT COLORADO SPRINGS WRITING RETREAT

Randy Powell(COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., May 1, 2006—Area writers are invited to join us for the 2006 Summer Workshop entitled “Learn, Create, Write, Revise … Taking Your Novel to the Next Level.” Award-winning author, Randy Powell, will be leading this three-day workshop aimed at helping you move forward with your middle-grade or young adult novel. These sessions will offer critique and inspiration for those who have the beginnings of an idea as well as writers ready to revise a full manuscript.

The Summer Retreat, sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Chapter of The Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI), will begin the afternoon of Friday, June 23rd and go through Sunday, June 25th at the Franciscan Center in Colorado Springs. Over the course of the weekend, participants will join in presentations from Mr. Powell on structure, plotting, characterization, revising work, and much more to help make a story come alive. In small groups, retreat attendees will have the opportunity to brainstorm with their peers then take individual time to incorporate what they’ve learned in bringing their written work that much closer to a finished, polished novel ready for submission.

Randy Powell has written seven novels for young adults, all published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux. Many of his novels have been selected for ALA Best Books and other national and state best-book lists. His novel, Is Kissing A Girl Who Smokes Like Licking An Ashtray? was the winner of the 1992 PEN/West award for Chidren’s Literature.

The cost of the retreat is $275 for SCBWI members and $315 for non-members. This fee includes a single room for two nights and meals. Discounts are available for attendees sharing a room.
