Should J. K. Rowling be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2004 for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix? James T. Downey, an author, artist and owner of Legacy Art, tells us why J.K. Rowling should receive the Nobel Prize in Literature on the website he's launched.

Downey asks us to consider: "Has anyone else done as much to re-invigorate reading in the last decade? Has anyone else so captivated millions with a moral story of good and evil, the pain of growing up parentless, the magic of personal choice?"

How Nobel Laureates in Literature are chosen:

The Nobel Prize website lists the qualifications needed to nominate someone for the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel Committee told Downey that "there is absolutely no point in sending nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature by e-mail."

What we should not do

Let's not make this a spam campaign. Rather than send emails to the Nobel Committee against their wishes let's talk to anyone that meets the qualifications to be an official nominator and ask them to consider nominating Rowling on behalf of children and their parents worldwide.

What we can do

If you know anyone qualified to nominate J.K. Rowling for a Nobel Prize in Literature ask them if we could list their name on the CCF site as someone children and their parents could write to. Send us a copy of their reply giving us permission to do so and we'll list them as a contact.

James T. Downey has come up with a great idea. Wouldn't it be marvelous if the Nobel Prize was awarded to someone who's fired up the imagination of millions of children and adults alike through her writing? Someone who's made readers out of non readers? James Downey's idea is a great one. Let's go for it!

Take our poll and let us know what you think:

Do you think the author of the Harry Potter books should receive the Nobel Prize in Literature?
