She took one of the mysterious seeds and tossed it in her mouth.
“Waxy,” thought Breanna. The taste reminded her of pulling weeds, but in a good way. Her friend Sun always had something interesting in her lunchbox.
“What did you call it?” she asked. “Someone’s mommy?
“Edamame,” Sun giggled. “ Eda-mam-e. Have another.”
Sun handed her a velvety green pod. It looked like a lumpy caterpillar. “How do I get the seeds out?”
“Squeeze it like toothpaste,” Sun instructed.
Breanna squeezed. A round bean shot out and landed in the hood of Ben Lacy’s sweatshirt.
“Whoops,” said Breanna. “I need practice.”
“Come for dinner Friday,” Sun said. “My mom’s making my favorite - potstickers!”
Breanna thought of snails clinging to flower pots, but it couldn’t be anything like that. Everything Sun shared was delicious.
When she arrived to Sun’s house she inhaled the cozy aroma of vegetable dumplings.
“Hold your chopsticks like this,” Sun demonstrated when they sat down.
Breanna tried to copy Sun, but her potsticker went flying and landed on the toaster. Sun’s mom smiled.
“Everything you feed me flies like a rocket!” Breanna cried, red-faced.
“Must be Mom’s cooking,” laughed Sun. “It’s out of this world!”
