When Push Comes to Shove
Contest #200908
I dug my toes into the soft white sand and refused to move. My knees trembled and knocked, locking in fear and isolation as I stared out at the rushing waves. They were cackling and taunting as their fingers groped at the sand, wishing desperately that they could inch forward and reach me, consume me.

PPW Fiction Contest: VIP Judges - complete list
11.03.09
Are you entering the Pikes Peak Writers Fiction Contest this year? Check out the list of VIP judges that Dawn Miller just posted to the PPW's listserv (and I'm copying below with her permission). That list is totally impressive! So, if you were thinking of submitting an entry and have yet to do so, you've got until November 15th to submit your entry.

Highlights 2010 Fiction Contest
2009.09.28
Many of the entries we receive for the CCF Online writing contest are of high caliber. We felt some of the entries would qualify for the Highlights 2010 Fiction Contest so we wrote Highlights asking whether they would accept entries that had been published to the CCF site and they said that, yes, they would.

POCKETS Writer's Guidelines
2009.09.14
I grew up in Cuba reading "El Aposento Alto" (The Upper Room). This was a wonderful devotional I read from cover to cover. The stories in it inspired and strenghtened me, especially after Castro took over the country and communism was established.

Send us a first line we can use for the CCF Online Writing Contest. The contest changes themes, and first lines, on a monthly basis. CCF began its online writing contest in 2007 and received great entries that were posted to the site. We'll continue the contest this year and would love to receive suggested first lines from our site's visitors and contest participants.

A Crabby Fourth of July
Contest #200907
With July 4th just days away I received a call from the restaurant that I had ordered a bushel of crabs from, and they told me that they were sorry but they would not be able to fill my order. They said that the number of crabs that they actually received was much lower then what they had expected.

Alley Sounds
Contest #200910:
As they approached the alley, Samantha and Drew tensed. A large, menacing red-eyed rat stopped in its tracks, mesmerized by Samantha's flashlight beam. Holding on to her little brother, Samantha held her breath as the wind howled and cut through her. "Night Alley" was the quickest shortcut home, otherwise Samantha would never have suggested it. With dark clouds overhead, the alley felt even more threatening. Now, she was regretting her decision. And poor Drew! He went anywhere she asked him to.

Sweet Dreams
Contest #200910
As they approached the alley, they noticed the sun was setting. He looked at her with his blood red eyes and his fangs were showing. It was time and she moved the collar of her shirt and showed her bare skin. He stepped closer, licked the spot, and then he sank his teeth into the gorgeous red flow. She winced in pain but only for a short time. When he was done, he licked the mark and it stopped bleeding. He licked his lips and grinned and then vanished into the darkness.
