"On the way to grandma's house,” Mom patiently explains to us kids, “there are some things to see.”
We all reply in a monotone.
“Yes mom,” Dave murmurs while fiddling with his iPod, waiting to put on his headphones.
“Like what kind of things?” Gina asks. “I don’t remember her well.”
“Oh please don’t get her started Gina,” Dave and Sandra complain.
“Mom, can we start watching the movie…p l e a s e?” Samantha pleads.
“What’s the big deal Sam?” Sandra asks, “It’s not like you haven’t seen it a hundred times before.”
Jacey whines, “how come Andromeda gets to stay home?”
“Your grandmother…” mom stops for a moment.
“Hey look! There is that covered bridge,” Gina says. “Can we drive across it?”
“Yep,” Dad and the other kids murmur holding their breath. “That rickety old bridge.”
As they reach the other side, a large crashing noise startles them. Dad gets out.
“I guess we go home the long way today,” Jacey says.
‘Wow. We made it across before the roof collapsed!” Gina says. “I bet grandma will be glad to see us now.”
The kids laugh as mom hugs Gina. “Yes I certainly hope so.”
