The Lonely Turkey

"Beware of man eating turkey!” That’s what the signs always say. You know, it’s hard to be an over-sized turkey. Whenever anybody sees you, they start running the other way. I’m extremely lonely, but this is the story of how I made a friend.

One day, about Thanksgiving time, I was walking in the woods were I hide when I heard a very faint “Meow” over by the creek-bed. I went over to investigate and found it come from a tiny gray kitten, apparently the only one to have survived drowning when a litter was thrown into the creek.

Although the kitten herself was just barely breathing, I took her home to my nest, which was on the ground, as no tree could support my weight. For many a night I nursed the little one, who I named Mittens, and fed her on rich cream and partridges until she was almost as big as me!

And Mittens stayed with me, not at all afraid. And for the first time in my life I had a friend.

P.S. About the man eating turkey sign, I don’t really eat humans. Humans just think I do because I’m so big.
