It was a dark and stormy night, later to be called "The Turtle Crossing Night." Dad and I were driving home. We were almost there, because I could see lights ahead. I was relaxing when, EEEEKKK! The car jerked to a stop and we jolted forward.
"Are you okay?" dad asked.
"Yes. Why did we stop?" I leaned forward and squinted into the darkness. I could see our house and Mom's worried face in the window. I looked back at the road. Just then, I spotted something.
“See that?” Dad asked, and laughed.
I crawled into the front seat. It was then I saw them, about 50 turtles were crossing the road! There was a lake out back, and they probably lived there. The lake must have overflowed! I laughed, too. The turtles were taking their time crossing the road in a neat line. It really was a funny sight!
Dad took a different route to our house. We called everyone we could to help the animals cross safely. Everyone came, and it became a group effort to help the turtles. We were done soon, and after that, we had a memory to share: The night of the Turtle Crossing!
