I stood by the door, holding the box of Valentines. The overwhelming smell of sugar hits me when I arrive at the cookie store. As my way of adding lightheartedness to this overrated holiday, I pass out cutsie cards to workers diligently creating the 3,000 delicacies for lovers.
These unappreciative souls grumble. How dare them
—it’s THE DAY OF ROMANCE. But at midnight, with aching hands and dozens of bouquets to finish, my gesture is taken sarcastically. Those annoying formulaic expressions of true love like "Hugs & Kisses," "Cutie Pie," "So Fine," and "Happy Valentine’s Day!" have annoyed even the most dedicated employee. As I ruin my hands, and feel left out again, I wonder why so much external pressure is put on us to purchase last minute generic be-a-good-boyfriend/girlfriend-or-husband/wife gift.
As I struggle with hearts, big red lips, and goofy expressions, I notice a lonely upside-down cookie on the baking sheet. A crack runs up its middle. My fellow workers think I’ve lost it when I become hysterical. "Doesn’t this look like a backside?" I ask. "This is what I think of V-day," and write, "Happy Valentine’s Day Buttface." They all agree.
